If you are
allergic to Shellfish, read this article.
Glucosamine is a dietary
supplement used by millions of people. Current production of
glucosamine is derived from shellfish, which can cause an allergic
reaction in some people. Glucosamine, a
sugar produced in the body and found in small amounts in foods.
Glucosamine is a small molecule.
Just remember glucosamine
will make you sick if you are allergic to shellfish. Glucosamine
sulfate as
a dietary supplement comes in many forms, including glucosamine HCL
or glucosamine hydrochloride may increase the risk of developing
insulin resistance and could decrease the metabolic actions of
insulin. Although glucosamine and Chondroitin sulfate are
bio-chemically classed as carbohydrates (sugars), the body is not
able to break them down into glucose, so these compounds do not
raise blood sugar by providing an additional source of glucose.
However, many factors can affect insulin secretion and blood glucose
levels in diabetic patients, and we recommend that individuals with
diabetes check their blood glucose levels frequently when initiating
glucosamine into their regimen.
High
dosages of glucosamine may cause gastric problems, nausea ,
diarrhea, indigestion, and heartburn. Glucosamine should be taken
with meals to help reduce these problems.
Glucosamine
is technically a form of an amino sugar that plays a major role in
cartilage formation and repair. Glucosamine stimulates the
production of water-binding glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans,
two essential building blocks of cartilage and also inhibits the
production of chondrocytes, enzymes that break down cartilage.
Glucosamine Side
Effects:
There are no known side effects with glucosamine, but you should be
aware:
1. If you are allergic to shellfish, be careful taking glucosamine.
Glucosamine allergies are caused by proteins in shellfish (not
chitin) which is a carbohydrate from which glucosamine is extracted.
Furthermore, there is no crossover between the acid derived chitin
from shells and the antigens that cause shellfish allergies since
the acid process required to leach the chitin from the shell strips
away the carbohydrate side chains that would be antigenic. In other
words, it should be safe for someone with an allergy to iodine or
shellfish to take glucosamine. It is advised that if you have
reactions to glucosamine to consult your physician.

3. If you are pregnant you should not take glucosamine
products.
4. High dosages of glucosamine
may cause gastric problems, nausea, diarrhea, indigestion and
heartburn. To avoid this take your glucosamine with food.
